Free home test kits available for cancer

Did you know that bowel cancer is the 3rd most common type of cancer in the UK? Luckily, in the majority of cases, it can be treated if detected early enough. So the NHS is offering free home test kits to everyone aged between 60-69. If you’re registered with a GP you’ll automatically be sent a free test kit, complete with full instructions. If you’re aged 70 or over, or would simply like more information, you can call for advice and a free home test kit on 0800 707 60 60 or visit www.cancerscreening.nhs.uk

Nottingham Mela 08 hits town!

The Nottingham Mela 08 hits town on the 27th July, bringing the best of Asian culture, history and entertainment to the masses. This year it’s in the Old Market Square in Nottingham, is free to enter, and is open to everyone of course. The fun starts at 12.30pm until 6.00pm.

You’re sure to be in for a surprise…picnic! The Hindu Youth Group are organising a picnic to celebrate the Hindu Sangathan Divas from 10am to 4pm at Rushcliffe Country Park, Mere Way, Ruddington, NG11 6JS – this Sunday, 13th July. (The park is off the A60 Loughborough Road).

The Group has run similar events every year and they’ve always been a big success so please do come along and join in the fun – and bring your family and friends!

There will also be Open Yoga in the fresh air at 10am followed by outdoor games so please wear suitable clothing and bring a mat!

New Leaf turns over a new leaf!

New Leaf Nottingham, the stop-smoking service run by Nottingham City Primary Care Trust (PCT) is introducing a whole host of initiatives this month to help city smokers kick their habit and live longer, healthier lives.

A new telephone support service has been launched to provide information and advice to those wanting to give up smoking. Smokers can get an immediate consultation with a specially-trained advisor who will be able to offer on-the-spot support and encouragement to those wanting to take the first step in stopping smoking.

Smokers can then either be referred to one of more than 50 New Leaf clinics across the city for further help or sign up for regular, on-going telephone advice and support – whichever is most convenient for them.

According to the Nottinghamshire NHS, hundreds of people have responded to their call for people to have their say on the NHS’s vision for the next ten years.

A draft plan, called A Picture of Health, has been put together by NHS organisations from across the county. It incorporates both the views expressed during the public consultation from November 2007 to March 2008, and the joint work of the clinicians across Nottinghamshire, who are leading the work.

The initial feedback from patients and the public showed that they wanted the NHS to concentrate on areas such as getting the basics right including privacy and dignity for patients; investing in promoting good health; making care more personal; and ensuring different services work more closely together.

Wider Users Forum Meeting

Nottingham City Council’s Adult Services Housing & Health (ASHH) team are holding a Wider Users Forum Meeting on the 1st August, 11am – 2pm at the Council House, Old Market Square, Nottingham.

According to ASHH, the Forum has been set up in response to service users’ requests and aims to give the wider service users’ community the opportunity to get involved and contribute to the Service Users Strategy Group’s work. Plus of course, the event will be a chance to meet others and share information.

If anyone requires childcare, translators or assistance with travel costs this can be arranged. Lunch will also be provided (please let Sharon know if you have any special dietary requirements). Places are limited and the Council would like the majority of attendees to be service users, although service users are welcome to come along with their support worker, for example.

Raising awareness of sickle cell

July is Sickle Cell awareness month and the Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Service, hosted by Nottingham City Primary Care Trust (PCT), will be working to ensure that local people who may be affected are well informed about the condition. Sickle Cell is a condition which affects red blood cells and means they can’t travel round the blood system as easily. Symptoms include severe pain in the arms, legs, back and abdomen, increased vulnerability to infection, occasional bouts of weakness, tiredness, shortness of breath and jaundice and damage to bones, hips and vital organs.

The condition is genetic and inherited from both parents. It is found mainly in people whose families come from Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East and India. However, people from all ethnic origins can be carriers. Events throughout the month include a variety of dedicated programmes each Wednesday between 10am and 1pm on the Health and Wellbeing Show on Kemet 97.5FM. Each week the programmes will have a different focus ranging from how Sickle Cell affects adults and parents, to children and young people. There will also be information about antenatal and newborn screening and how the voluntary sector can support people with Sickle Cell.

A Caribbean Food Tasting Event will be held on Sunday 27th July at Benson’s Wine Bar on Mansfield Road, Nottingham, to raise money for the Sickle Cell Charitable Fund. The event will run from 12 noon until 6pm and will include musical entertainment as well as loads of delicious Caribbean food.

I write for our cousin Mitesh who unfortunately is in the late stages of
cancer, specifically B cell lymphoma. He is currently in hospital with a very weak immune system and urgently requires a bone marrow transplant to survive.

Unfortunatly, all treatments to date have been unsuccessful and Mitesh
now requires a close tissue match. A number of people are involved
worldwide, however the level of tissue matches for asians are low due to the small
numbers registered. So far there has not been a match for Mitesh.

Our family members are currently being tested – it’s a quick & simple
test which could save a life.

Please take 2 minutes to view the attached PDF’s – the first is about
Mitesh, the second is about his tissue match. Please feel free to print
& display these in order to spread the message.
