Make it a date on Sunday

March 28, 2008

This Sunday, 30th March, the Nottinghamshire Black Partnership is playing host to not one, but two, very special events.

Firstly, forget the Oscars, the V Awards are the place to be seen! Designed to recognise the contribution that Black and Minority Ethnic volunteers make to the community, the awards will recognise the hard work and enthusiasm of the county’s many tireless volunteers and celebrate the difference that volunteers in general make to society.

Secondly, we’re also holding a very special healthy living event on Sunday, where you can come along and pick up loads of great hints and tips on any aspect of healthy living from the professionals. Plus they’ll be lots of stalls and demonstrations from people including henna artists and local jewelry makers.

And, just in case you need anymore persuading – Desi Express is providing lunch so you won’t even have to worry about making Sunday dinner!

Both events are on from 12pm-4pm at our new offices: 3rd Floor, Lace Market House, 54-56 High Pavement, Lace Market, Nottingham. See you there!

Happy Easter!

March 20, 2008

We’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Easter and hope you enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend! Hopefully the weather will pick up a little and it’ll feel a bit more like spring when we return to work next week.

Don’t forget, if you’d like to have your say about any of the stories on our blog or about any issue relating to BME communities in general you’re very welcome to comment. We really want our blog to become a forum for exchanging views and a place to debate the issues that matter to us all so get blogging!

We’ve moved!

March 17, 2008

As you may know, we moved offices a couple of weeks ago and are now located in the lovely Lace Market in the centre of town. Despite all the upheaval and packing and unpacking it’s a great move for us and will hopefully enable us to provide Nottinghamshire’s BME communities with an even better service. Our phone number hasn’t changed – that’s still 0115 979 1234 but our new address is: 3rd Floor, Lace Market House, 54-56 High Pavement, Nottingham, NG1 1HW. Remember, we’re always here to help so please don’t hesitate to give us a call or pop in.

Coming soon…

March 17, 2008

We’ve got not one, but two, very special events coming up very soon, and the good news is that they’re both in the same place at the same time, so you’ll definitely be able to enjoy both! We don’t want to give too much away just yet, but let’s just say, one event could mean some very good news for volunteers, and the other could mean very good news for YOU – mind, body and soul! Keep checking our blog for more details coming soon…

Arranged marriages – have your say

March 11, 2008

As you may well have seen in the news lately, the government’s Department of Children, Schools and Families, is becoming increasingly concerned about the welfare of around 2,000 ‘missing’ children, many of whom they fear may have been taken abroad and forced into arranged marriages, possibly against their will. The story is bound to raise the issue of arranged marriages so why not tell us what you think and in your view, what could be done to protect young people whilst educating the general public?

March 11, 2008

Due to popular demand, a talk on Hinduism, entitled ‘Hinduism – a purpose driven life’ (organised by the University of Nottingham Hindu Society) is being repeated to enable more people to attend.

The first night’s talk, given by the Sadhus of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, will be held on Wednesday 12th March at 7pm and will be open to students and staff from Nottingham’s universities, colleges and secondary schools.

All other members of the public are welcome to attend the second night’s talk, given by the same Sadhus, on Thursday 13th March at the Swaminarayan Temple at 8pm, including dinner, which will be served between 7pm-8pm.

Heart to Heart

March 11, 2008

The Nottingham City Primary Care Trust (PCT) are expanding their ‘Heartbeat’ programme; a scheme that helps individuals who have experienced heart problems to improve their fitness. People living in Bulwell and the Arboretum area of the city will now have the chance to take part in ‘Heartbeat’ exercise classes, which are run by qualified fitness instructors, giving them the opportunity to stay fit and healthy whilst meeting people who have gone through similar experiences.

Keeping fit is one of the best ways to prevent heart problems in the future so the PCT are hopeful that expanding the Heartbeat programme will help to improve many people’s quality of life.

The new ‘Heartbeat’ sessions are being delivered in partnership with Nottingham City Council and the YMCA and are available in Bulwell at the Healthy Living Centre on Mondays between 10am – 11.30am and at the All Saints YMCA on Raleigh Street, near the Arboretum, on Wednesdays between 6pm – 7.30pm.

Anyone interested in attending must be referred by their GP or Practice Nurse.

New members will receive a free pedometer and will also be offered support and a mentor to attend the classes with, if they wish. To find out more call Paul Dodsley on 0115 883 4237 or visit www.getmovingnottingham.nhs.uk/heartbeats
